Applications

  • Rigid endoscopy — cystoscopy, hysteroscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy (all Karl Storz endoscopic procedures)
  • Flexible endoscopy — bronchoscopy, ENT flexible scopes with Karl Storz-fitting light source
  • ENT sinus surgery — FESS + rhinoscopy with 4mm 0° / 30° Hopkins II scopes
  • Gynecology — diagnostic + operative hysteroscopy
  • Urology — cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, PCNL
  • Orthopedic arthroscopy — knee, shoulder, hip arthroscopy
  • Veterinary endoscopy — small animal cystoscopy + laparoscopy
  • Simulation training — surgical residency + medical school skills labs
  • Backup / spare cable — every endoscopy suite needs a spare (fiber cables break!)

Why buy a spare cable

Fiber optic cables are the highest-failure component in an endoscopy tower. Cables break at the connectors from repeated bending, get tangled on OR tables + gurneys, get autoclaved incorrectly (kinked fibers), or get physically damaged during procedure handoffs. When a cable fails mid-case, the procedure stops. Every endoscopy suite should have a spare cable in stock. At $299.99, this SciMed cable is a fraction of OEM replacement cost — order one spare per active OR/procedure suite as insurance.

Best for

  • Hospital endoscopy suites (OR + procedure room)
  • Ambulatory surgery centers (ASC) with rigid + flexible endoscopy
  • ENT + urology + gynecology + ortho + veterinary practices
  • Surgical residency + medical school simulation labs
  • Endoscopy repair + refurbishment shops (backup inventory)
  • International endoscopy DDP procurement (huge cost savings vs OEM)
  • Humanitarian surgical NGOs (Mercy Ships, Operation Smile, MSF surgical programs)

Buying for a hospital, ASC, or surgical NGO?

  • Volume pricing on 3+ cables (equip multiple OR suites)
  • Net-30 invoicing for verified surgical accounts
  • SAM.gov / VA compliant for federal + military surgical procurement
  • Adapters for Wolf / Olympus / Stryker light sources available on request
  • International DDP shipping — global surgical equipment procurement

FAQ

Will this actually fit my Karl Storz light source?

Yes — for all standard Karl Storz light sources using the 495NE / 495ND fitting (which is the current-generation Storz standard: Xenon Nova, Xenon 300, Power LED). Older 486/487-fitting Storz sources need an adapter. If unsure, email a photo of your light-source input receptacle and we'll confirm before order.

Light throughput vs OEM Karl Storz?

Very close — this cable uses standard 3.5mm active fiber bundle with high-quality glass fibers. Practical throughput vs a fresh OEM cable is within ~5-10% at delivery. Every cable degrades over service life (broken fibers accumulate); this SciMed cable degrades at similar rate to OEM. For 5-year service life economics, ~40-50% total cost savings vs OEM.

Autoclave-safe?

Yes — 134°C standard steam autoclave, ETO, and chemical high-level disinfectant all safe. DO NOT autoclave with tight kinks or coiled bends — kink stress cracks fibers permanently. Coil to at least 6-inch diameter loops for autoclave.

How can I tell when a cable needs replacement?

Two tests: (1) Shine cable-source-end at a white wall — dark spots in the illumination circle indicate broken fibers. (2) Compare light output to a new cable — if noticeably dimmer, half the fibers are likely broken. Typical service life: 200-500 procedures depending on handling care.
