FAQ
How does this compare to a Retsch PM100?
Retsch PM100 is a planetary ball mill (higher energy density, faster grinding to nanoscale, wider RPM range 100-650). Ours is a rotational ball mill (simpler mechanism, 80 RPM fixed, longer grind times to reach same particle size). For most analytical prep + traditional Ayurvedic work, this SciMed unit is fully adequate. For nanoscale + high-energy mechanochemistry, PM100 is required. Price differential: $1,499 vs $6,500-$8,500.
Can I use different grinding materials?
SS 304 balls + container ship standard. Agate (contamination-free for trace analysis), zirconia (harder + wear-resistant), tungsten carbide (highest hardness for very hard samples), and hardened chromium steel (industrial grinding) balls + containers available as accessories on request.
What particle size can I achieve?
Typical 10-100 μm final particle size depending on starting material + grind time. Softer materials (organics, Ayurvedic herbs) reach 10-30 μm in 30-60 min. Harder materials (rock, ceramic) take 2-4 hours to reach 50-100 μm. For sub-micron / nano grinding, planetary ball mills are required.
How much sample per batch?
2 kg batch capacity means you can grind up to 2 kg of raw material per run — typically fill container 30-50% to leave room for balls + head space. Grinding balls should equal 30-40% of container volume.
What's the warranty?
1-year parts + labor. Motor 3-year warranty. Grinding balls + container are consumables (wear during use); replacement stocked in San Jose.
